Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve

Aksu-Zhabagly is Kazakhstan's oldest state nature reserve and part of the transnational UNESCO Western Tien-Shan property. Visits operate under the current rules of a protected area.

Location: Turkistan Region

Why it matters

Routes introduce mountain ecosystems, canyon landscapes, plants and wildlife observation without guaranteeing sightings. Conservation remains the reserve's primary purpose.

How to plan access

Contact the administration in advance to confirm open routes, permits, required accompaniment, entrance and physical difficulty. Unrestricted independent access is not appropriate.

When to visit

Access depends on route, snow, floods, fire risk and conservation work. A section may remain closed even in apparently good weather.

What defines the place

  • part of UNESCO Western Tien-Shan
  • mountain and canyon routes
  • strict conservation regime
